In this section, we will show you a selection of songs that we can relate to solar eclipses… Most of these songs we selected mention the word ‘eclipse’, but not all of them… The most important thing is that they are inspiring and engaging for the theme ‘solar eclipses…’ We put here a link for each song, a brief description with our remarks on each song, and lyrics… You are welcome to write to our email if you have a new song that is not yet on our list, and that you would like to include! Our email is eclipseshistory@gmail.com

This video explains a process called sonification. Signals from satellites observing a total solar eclipse are sent to a room where they activate software on a computer that makes specific sounds on musical instruments. They create sort of a symphony derived from satellite signals from the sun and transmitted to Earth through satellites. Would you imagine such a celestial orchestra originated from a total solar eclipse? God would love that… Children and adults around the world too! Here is where science meets the Arts!

Here it follows our selection of songs… We used as sources two websites that we will tell you about at the end of this section…

When the Day Met the Night (Panic! at the Disco)

________________________________________________________________

Although this song does not mention the word “eclipse” it is a beautiful song that talks about a romance between the Sun and Moon… The song says that “the day meets the night…” And the Sun and Moon fall in love with each other in this inspiring song… We include this song under our category of eclipse-related songs, because in science the “meeting” of sun and moon is the total solar eclipse…

Lyrics

When the moon fell in love with the sun
All was golden in the sky
All was golden when the day met the night

When the sun found the moon
She was drinking tea in a garden
Under the green umbrella trees
In the middle of summer

When the moon found the sun
He looked like he was barely hanging on
But her eyes saved his life
In the middle of summer (summer)

In the middle of summer
All was golden in the sky
All was golden when the day met the night
Summer, all was golden in the sky
All was golden when the day met the night
Summer, summer, summer, summer
Golden when the day met the night

So he said, “Would it be all right
If we just sat and talked for a little while
If in exchange for your time
I give you this smile?”

So she said, “That’s okay
As long as you can make a promise
Not to break my little heart
Or leave me all alone in the summer”

Well, he was just hanging around
Then he fell in love
And he didn’t know how
But he couldn’t get out
Just hanging around
Then he fell in love

Conjugal eclipse. Some people have a romantic view of eclipses. The Sun and Moon are lovers who, when they embrace, turn off the lights to assure intimacy. You’re So Vain (Carly Simon)

________________________________________________________________

This song has an involving, very beautiful melody… “You’re so vain” was released in 1972… It mentions that a boyfriend flew to Nova Scotia (Canada) to see the total eclipse of the sun… By the way, a total solar eclipse was observed in Nova Scotia on April 8, 2024… Very recently… But the song refers to a total solar eclipse that occurred in Nova Scotia on July 10, 1972…

Lyrics

Son of a gun

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror, as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they’d be your partner
They’d be your partner and

You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you

You’re so vain (you’re so vain)
I bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you, don’t you?

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair and that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee, clouds in my coffee and
You’re so vain

You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain, you’re so vain
I bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you don’t you, don’t you?

I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee, clouds in my coffee and

You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain (you’re so vain)
I bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you don’t you

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun

Well you’re where you should be all the time
And when you’re not, you’re with some underworld spy
Or the wife of a close friend, wife of a close friend and

You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain (so vain)

Eclipse (Lindsey Stirling)

________________________________________________________________

This is an instrumental song, but the melody in our opinion reminds us of a total solar eclipse… It is involving and captivating… There are strong tones that remind us of the universe… And solar eclipses…

Here we share a beautiful picture of the solar corona to inspire you… The outermost atmosphere of the sun…

The magnificent solar corona. This picture shows the total phase of the March 9, 2016, solar eclipse as seen from aboard the cruise ship Le Soleál in the Molucca Sea off the coast of Indonesia. Eclipse (LOONA/Kim Lip)

________________________________________________________________

This is a song by South Korean singer, Kim Lip… We include here lyrics in English… It is a common song that talks about love, but we have chosen it for our eclipses related playlist because this song brings beautiful images of a solar eclipse… And it mentions the word ‘eclipse’ several times…

In 2023, an annular solar eclipse was visible in part of the Americas… It was visible in northern Brazil, for example… Here we share an image of the eclipse taken from space…

Annular eclipse of the sun, October 2023. Photo of an annular solar eclipse taken by the solar optical telescope Hinode as the Moon came between it and the Sun. Credit: JAXA/NASA. Source: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2023/nasa-the-eclipse/

LOONA – Eclipse (English Translation) Lyrics

(I feel Sparks Yeah~)
(It’s just me oh~)
(Cause baby I just got this feeling whoah~)
This is our fantasy, Come to me, Follow me
Something is shaking in my heart (Hush), Breathtakingly
Hey baby
Your eyes which looked at me secretly
Those make me shake

(Cupid love)
In a moment, the tention is relaxed and a weak sound of breath
It’s spreding endlessly
Sweet voice in the dream (I turn around)

It begins Eclipse
In the shaded shadows where you and I meet
It happened in the fate
The love which is lighted by mind of us
Come closer to me
This is Eclipse
I can’t keep my eyes off, so will you be with me continuously?
Unforgettable Eclipse. It’s destiny

I’m so excited because you have different color with me
Will you show me the color which is hidden in your mind?
Hey baby
I’ll see it under the light alone without anyone knowing
I’m going to crazy because I’m curious

Eclipse – 1973 (Pink Floyd)

________________________________________________________________

This song clearly shows an image of a total solar eclipse… It is part of a 1973 Pink Floyd album called Dark Side of the Moon… And the lyrics mention a total solar eclipse… Although the song does not seem to be specifically about an eclipse… Actually, the selection of eclipse-related songs that we present here mention eclipses, often solar, but usually these songs talk about love or are simply musical poetry… But they are beautiful and inspiring…

Lyrics

All that you touch
And all that you see
All that you taste
All you feel
And all that you love
And all that you hate
All you distrust
All you save
And all that you give
And all that you deal
And all that you buy
Beg, borrow or steal
And all you create
And all you destroy
And all that you do
And all that you say
And all that you eat
And everyone you meet (everyone you meet)
And all that you slight
And everyone you fight
And all that is now
And all that is gone
And all that’s to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon

Pink Floyd

We share here a picture of this famous band…

Pink Floyd. Author: Capitol Records. Source: Billboard, page 25, 30 October 1971, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pink_Floyd_%281971%29.png

Now let us share an astonishing image from a solar eclipse from the beginning until the end… You can see in the center of the image the moment when the corona is visible… You can also see prominences and Baily’s beads coming out of the sun atmosphere… They are only visible during a total solar eclipse…

Credit: Michael Zeiler. Source: https://eclipse.aas.org/sites/eclipse.aas.org/files/TSE2023Apr20_MichaelZeiler.jpg

Only during Totality – when the sun is completely covered by the moon – you can look directly at the sun, but only for some moments… Do not stare for so long, as the sun can suddenly appear and that strong direct sunlight could harm your eyes permanently…

Owl City – Galaxies (Adam Young)

________________________________________________________________

This song praises God, calling Lord the only North Star… It also mentions solar eclipses… It reminds us of a sermon where the priest talked about the necessary connection between science and religion… The song also mentions that the sun went dark, referring to a solar eclipse… God is the meaning of life and the universe, and I also believe science and religion should go together… The magnificence of a solar eclipse is an example of God’s concern to provide us with such an astronomical spectacle… Children and adults are fascinated by solar eclipses… And God is present everywhere, including in our eclipsed sun in the sky… This song is also an example of the connection of God with arts… Actually, God is much higher than simply religions… And there are references to solar and lunar eclipses in the Bible, such as during Jesus crucification…

Lyrics

Call back the CAPCOM
Tick off the time bomb
Let felicity fly!

Armor the air lock
Blanket the bed rock
And kiss the planet goodbye! (Through the galaxies)

Dear God, I was terribly lost
When the galaxies crossed
And the sun went dark
But dear God, you’re the only North Star
I would follow this far

Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da (Through the galaxies)
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da
(Through the galaxies)
(Through the galaxies)
(Through the galaxies)
(Through the galaxies)
(Through the galaxies)
(Through the galaxies)

Fight back the flight deck
Bring on the break neck
Cue the solar eclipse! (Sun went dark)

Summit the sunset
Dub-tail the dragnet
And blow your backbone to bits (Through the galaxies)

Dear God, I was terribly lost
When the galaxies crossed
And the sun went dark (Sun went dark)
But dear God, you’re the only North Star
I would follow this far

Oh telescope
Keep an eye on my only hope
Lest I blink and get swept off the narrow road
Hercules, you’ve got nothing to say to me
‘Cause you’re not the blinding light that I need
For He is the saving grace of the galaxies (Galaxies)
He is the saving grace of the galaxies (Galaxies)

Dear God, I was terribly lost
When the galaxies crossed
And the sun went dark (Sun went dark)
But Dear God, you’re the only North Star
I would follow this far!

I would follow this far
(Through the galaxies)
(Through the galaxies)
(Through the galaxies)
(Through the galaxies)
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da

Total Eclipse of the Heart (Turn Around) (Bonnie Tyler)

________________________________________________________________

It is a typical love song, with a beautiful videoclip… The song has in the lyrics ‘total eclipse’ (of the heart)… Another possible correlation with the theme ‘eclipses’ is that the song shows a moon… Although not an eclipsed moon…

Lyrics

(Turn around)
Every now and then, I get a little bit lonely and
you’re never coming round
(Turn around)
Every now and then, I get a little bit tired of
listening to the sound of my tears
(Turn around)
Every now and then, I get a little bit nervous that
the best of all the years have gone by
(Turn around)
Every now and then, I get a little bit terrified
and then I see the look in your eyes
(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turn around bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turn around)

Every now and then I get a little bit restless
And I dream of something wild

(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit helpless
And I’m lying like a child in your arms

(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit angry
And I know I’ve got to get out and cry

(Turn around)
Every now and then I get a little bit terrified
But then I see the look in your eyes
(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turn around, bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight,
and I need you more than ever
And if you only hold me tight,
we’ll be holding on forever
And we’ll only be making it right
‘cause we’ll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
(all of the time)
I don’t know what to do and I’m always in the dark
We’re living in a powder keg and giving off sparks

I really need you tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I’m only falling apart
There’s nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time, there was light in my life
But now, there’s only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

(Turn around, bright eyes)
(Turn around, bright eyes)

And I need you now tonight,
and I need you more than ever
And if you’ll only hold me tight,
we’ll be holding on forever
And we’ll only be making it right
‘cause we’ll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
(all of the time)
I don’t know what to do, and I’m always in the dark
We’re living in a powder keg and giving off sparks

I really need you tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight
Forever’s gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I’m only falling apart
Nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time, there was light in my life
But now there’s only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart
A total eclipse of the heart
A total eclipse of the heart

(Turn around, bright eyes)
(Turn around, bright eyes)
(Turn around)

The Fly (U2)

________________________________________________________________

This is a song by the famous band U2, which has some astronomical related mentions, such as ‘They say the sun sometimes is eclipsed by the moon.’ Another astronomical related mention is the ‘universe exploding’… and ‘stars falling from the sky…” It is a rock/pop song with poetic/inspiring lyrics… Wikipedia says this song would be about someone calling from hell who enjoys being there… Fiction of course… This song also mentions love and friendship, for example… Such as in ‘It’s no secret that a friend is someone who lets you help…’

Lyrics

It’s no secret that the stars are falling from the sky
It’s no secret that our world is in darkness tonight.
They say the sun is sometimes eclipsed by the moon
Y’ know I don’t see you when she walks in the room.

It’s no secret that a friend is someone who lets you help.
It’s no secret that a liar won’t believe anyone else.
They say a secret is something you tell one other person
So I’m telling you, child.

Love, we shine like a burning star
We’re falling from the sky

A man will beg
A man will crawl
On the sheer face of love
Like a fly on a wall
It’s no secret at all

It’s no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest
It’s no secret ambition bites the nails of success
Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration and sing about the grief

Love, we shine like a burning star
We’re falling from the sky

A man will rise
A man will fall
From the sheer face of love
Like a fly from a wall
It’s no secret at all

Love, we shine like a burning star
We’re falling from the sky tonight
Love, we shine like a burning star
We’re falling from the sky

A man will rise
A man will fall
From the sheer face of love
Like a fly from a wall
It’s no secret at all

It’s no secret that the stars are falling from the sky
The universe exploding ‘cos-a one man’s lie
Look I gotta go, yeah, I’m running outta change
There’s a lot of things if I could I’d rearrange

Now we will share a picture of a sun partially eclipsed…

Blinded by the Light (Manfred Mann’s Earth Band)

________________________________________________________________

This is an interesting song that connects to the science and art of eclipse observation because of its title, “Blinded by the Light…” It reminds us that we should never look directly at the sun without protection… There are safer glasses for this purpose, and also the pinhole method that we explain in detail on our website… The song also says “Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun”… It is a poetic expression… “The eyes of the sun…” But we can interpret this as looking at the sun without protection… Something which we should never do… However, it can be safe to look directly at the sun only during totality, when the sun is totally covered by the moon shadow… However, you should look at the sun only for a few moments, because the sun can return from totality and your eyes could be permanently harmed… So just for a few moments enjoy the show by looking directly at the sun during totality only…

Lyrics

Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night

Madman, drummers, bummers
Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps
As the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin’ kinda older
I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasin’, sneezin’ and wheezin’
The calliope crashed to the ground

The calliope crashed to the ground!

But she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night

Some silicone sister with a manager mister
Told me I got what it takes
She said, “I’ll turn you on sonny to something strong
Play the song with the funky break”
And go-kart Mozart was checkin’ out the weather chart
To see if it was safe outside
And little Early-Pearly came by in his curly-wurly
And asked me if I needed a ride

Asked me if I needed a ride!

But she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light

She got down, but she never got tired
She’s gonna make it through the night
She’s gonna make it through the night

But, mama, that’s where the fun is

But mama, that’s where the fun is
Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun
But mama, that’s where the fun is

Some brimstone, baritone, anticyclone, rolling stone
Preacher from the East
Says, “Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in its funny bone
That’s where they expect it least
And some new-mown chaperone standin’ in the corner
Watchin’ the young girls dance
And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin’ with his frozen zone
Remind him of romance

The calliope crashed to the ground!

But she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night

blinded by the light
(Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat) revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
(In the dumps with the mumps) blinded by the light
(As the adolescent pumps his way into his hat) revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night

blinded by the light
(I tripped the merry-go-round) revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
(With this very unpleasin’, sneezin’ and wheezin’) blinded by the light
(The calliope crashed to the ground) revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night

blinded by the light
(And throws his lover in the sand) revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
(And some bloodshot, forget-me-not said daddy’s within earshot) blinded by the light
(Save the buckshot, turn up the band) revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night

blinded by the light
(Told me I got what it takes) revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
(She said, “I’ll turn you on, son, into something strong”)

She got down but she never got tired
She’s gonna make it through the night

Don’t let the sun go down on me (Elton John)

________________________________________________________________

This song also mentions… “blinded by the light…” so we can relate it to the dangers of observing the sun during a solar eclipse without proper protection… This is a very romantic and poetic Elton John’s song… We think that when he says “don’t let the sun go down on me” he may want to express that we cannot lose hope… Because we think that letting the sun go down on us may be giving up our fights and aspirations… And we should never give up our fights and aspirations with God’s help… As for God everything is possible…

Lyrics

I can’t light no more of your darkness
All my pictures seem to fade to black and white
I’m growing tired and time stands still before me
Frozen here on the ladder of my life

It’s just too late to save myself from falling
I took a chance and changed your way of life
But you misread
my meaning when I met you
Close the door and left me blind by the light

Don’t let the sun go down on me
Although I search myself,
it’s always someone else I see
I’ve just allowed a fragment of your life
to wander free
But losing everything is like the sun going down on me

I can’t find, oh the right romantic line
But see me once and see the way I feel
Don’t discard me
Just because you think I mean you harm
But these cuts I have
They need love
To help them heal

Don’t let the sun go down on me
Although I search myself,
it’s always someone else I see
I’ve just allowed a fragment of your life
to wander free
but losing everything is like the sun going down on me

Don’t let the sun go down on me
Although I search myself,
it’s always someone else I see
I’ve just allowed a fragment of your life
to wander free
but losing everything is like the sun going down on me!

Total Eclipse 1981 (Klaus Nomi)

________________________________________________________________

It is a song that refers many times “It is a total eclipse of the sun;” it is repeated on lyrics… It also says “Making the planet so hot”… So referring to both eclipses and general Astronomy… This song is poetry… A nice and involving song… A beautiful song to be played on the occasion of a total solar eclipse! By the way, the finest hour of a total solar eclipse is Totality, when the sun is completely covered by the moon and we can observe the astonishing solar corona…

Lyrics

Big shots
Argue about what they’ve got
Making the planet so hot
Hot as a holocaust

Blow up
Everything’s gonna go up
Even if you don’t show up
In your Chemise Lacoste

Total eclipse
It’s a total eclipse
It’s a total eclipse of the sun
Can’t come to grips with the total eclipse
Just a slip of the lips and you’re done

Fall out
Nobody left to crawl out
If someone calls
We’re all out
Turning in to French fries

Last dance
Let the entire cast dance
Do the dismembered blast dance
As we get atomized!

Total eclipse
It’s a total eclipse
It’s a total eclipse of the sun
Can’t come to grips with the total eclipse
Just a slip of the lips and you’re done

Now we show you the picture of a “diamond ring,” which appears just before the beginning of totality during a total solar eclipse…

Little Man, What Now? (Morrissey)

________________________________________________________________

This song mentions “did that swift eclipse torture you?”, it is interesting to us to think that eclipses have frightened earlier societies as we see on our eclipse stories… And even currently there are those who associate a total solar eclipse with end of times… So as the song says, an eclipse can “torture you”… Indeed, earlier societies regarded eclipses as bad omens… It is also interesting to remember that nature changes on the occasion of a total solar eclipse, in the sense that animals change behavior… ants stop working, dogs stop barking, birds stop singing… This is also a poetic song… Beautiful and inspiring…

Lyrics

An afternoon nostalgia
television show
you spoke in silhouette
but they couldn’t name you
although the panel were
very polite to you
but I remembered you
from Friday nights 1969
ATV – you murdered every line
too old to be a child star
too young to take leads
four seasons passed
and they AXED you
nervously juvenile
(WON’T SMILE!)
What became of you?
did that swift eclipse torture you?
a star at eighteen
and then-suddenly gone
down to a few lines
in the back page of a teenage annual
oh but I remembered you
I looked up to you

My Apocalypse (Metallica)

________________________________________________________________

In this heavy metal song, the lyrics mention “Total eclipse, suffer onto my apocalypse”… We also hear “Deadly vision, prophecy reveals,” and we can associate this song with apocalyptical prophecies that usually refer to total solar eclipses even in our current times, when people have basic scientific knowledge of the eclipse mechanism and scientific explanations… There is still some kind of fear and superstition surrounding total solar eclipses… Even in our Google era…

Lyrics

Claustrophobic
Crawl out of this skin
Heart explosive
Reach in, pull that pin
Fear thy name, Extermination
Desecrate inhale the fire

So we cross that line
Into the crypt
Total eclipse
Suffer unto my apocalypse

Deadly vision
Prophecy reveal
Death magnetic
Pulling closer still
Fear thy name, Annihilation
Desolate, inhale the fire

So we cross that line
Into the crypt
Total eclipse
Suffer unto my apocalypse

My Apocalypse
Go!

Crushing metal, ripping skin
Tossing body, mannequin
Spilling blood, bleeding gas

Mangled flesh, snapping spines
Dripping bloody valentine
Shatter face, spitting glass

Split apart
Split apart
Split apart
Spit, spit it out

What makes me drift a little bit closer
Dead man takes the steering wheel
What makes me know it’s time to cross over
Want to repeat until I feel

See through the skin, the bones they all rattle
Future and past they disagree
Flesh falls away, the bones they all shatter
I start to see the end in me
See the end in me

Claustrophobic
Crawl out of this skin
Heart explosive
Reach in, pull that pin

Violate, annihilate
My wounds unto my eyes
Obliterate, exterminate
And life itself denied
Fear thy name as hell awakens
Destiny, inhale the fire

So we’ve crossed that line
Into the crypt
Total eclipse
Suffer unto my apocalypse

Tyrant awaken my apocalypse
Demon awaken my apocalypse
Heaven awaken my apocalypse
Suffer forever my apocalypse

Triptych (Roxy Music)

________________________________________________________________

This song says that “Though the sun’s eclipse seems final, Surely he will rise again”… Yes, for many peoples in the past, total solar eclipses were interpreted as a sign that gods were angry, and as a result would punish people or even cause an apocalypse… On this song, there is the image of three crosses… We think they are Jesus crosses… By the way it is known that there was a solar eclipse on the day of Lord Jesus crucifixion, and there could have been also a lunar eclipse on that day… One of our eclipse stories tells that… This song seems to mention celestial related things… Such as when it says “Until the heavens opened”…

Lyrics

Here the soil is barren
Here, nothing grows
But crosses
They, know not what they do
You, your forgiveness
Falls as dew
Nailed upon a wooden frame
Twisted yet unbroken
Open mounted a silent choir
Understood, unspoken
Never was there heard a sound
Until the heavens opened
Now the tide is turning
To other-wordly yearning
Through the sun’s eclipse seems final
Surely he will rise again

And now let’s share a beautiful picture of several kids observing a solar eclipse…

Paint it Black (Rolling Stones)

________________________________________________________________

This song also seems to mention probably a solar eclipse, when it says… “I wanna see the sun/ Blotted out from the sky/ I wanna see it painted, painted, painted/ Painted black, yeah”… It does not mention the word ‘eclipse’ but it talks about ‘the sun being blotted out from the sky’… So the idea here is quite the same… In the song, there is also the poetic mentioning of perhaps an unpleasant inner feeling, such as in “I have to turn my head/ Until my darkness goes”…

Lyrics

I see a red door
And I want it painted black
No colors anymore
I want them to turn black

I see the girls walk by
Dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head
Until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars
And they’re all painted black
With flowers and my love
Both never to come back

I’ve seen people turn their heads
And quickly look away
Like a newborn baby
It just happens everyday

I look inside myself
And see my heart is black
I see my red door
I must have it painted black

Maybe then, I’ll fade away
And not have to face the facts
It’s not easy facing up
When your whole world is black

No more will my green sea
Go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing
Happening to you

If I look hard enough
Into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me
Before the morning comes

I see a red door
And I want it painted black
No colors anymore
I want them to turn black

I see the girls walk by
Dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head
Until my darkness goes

I wanna see it painted
Painted black
Black as night
Black as coal
I wanna see the sun
Blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted
Painted black, yeah

Blackstar (David Bowie)

________________________________________________________________

Although this song does not mention the word ‘eclipse,’ it does show a beautiful image of an eclipsed sun… There is also an astronaut costume, and when a woman opens his helmet, there is a skull inside… There are also religious citations on the song… As when it says “On the day of execution/ Only women kneel and smile,” which we guess refers to Jesus Christ crucifixion… It is also said “Something happened on the day he died/ Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside” which seems to us to be another allusion to Jesus crucifixion… The videoclip looks like an opera… Very sophisticated images… There are three crosses with ordinary people, but seem to be another allusion to the crucifixion of Jesus and the two thieves… So the videoclip is an interesting combination of space related and religious information…

Lyrics

In the villa of Ormen
In the villa of Ormen
Stands a solitary candle
In the centre of it all
In the centre of it all
Your eyes

On the day of execution
On the day of execution
Only women kneel and smile
At the centre of it all
At the centre of it all
Your eyes
Your eyes

In the villa of Ormen
In the villa of Ormen
Stands a solitary candle
In the centre of it all
In the centre of it all
Your eyes

Something happened on the day he died
Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside
Somebody else took his place
And bravely cried

(I’m a blackstar)
(I’m a blackstar)

How many times does an angel fall?
How many people lie instead of talking tall?
He trod on sacred ground
He cried loud into the crowd

(I’m a blackstar)
(I’m a blackstar)
(I’m not a gangster)

I can’t answer why
(I’m a blackstar)
Just go with me
(I’m not a filmstar)
I’m-a take you home
(I’m a blackstar)
Take your passport and shoes
(I’m not a popstar)
And your sedatives, boo
(I’m a blackstar)
You’re a flash in the pan
(I’m not a marvel star)
I’m the great, I am
(I’m a blackstar)

I’m a blackstar, way up, on money, I’ve got game
I see right, so wide, so open-hearted pain
I want eagles in my daydreams
Diamonds in my eyes

(I’m a blackstar)
(I’m a blackstar)

Something happened on the day he died
Spirit rose a metre then stepped aside
Somebody else took his place
And bravely cried

(I’m a blackstar)
(I’m a star’s star)
(I’m a blackstar)

I can’t answer why
(I’m not a gangster)
But I can tell you how
(I’m not a film star)
We were born upside-down
(I’m a star’s star)
Born the wrong way ‘round
(I’m not a white star)
(I’m a blackstar)
(I’m not a gangster)
(I’m a blackstar)
(I’m a blackstar)
(I’m not a pornstar)
(I’m not a wandering star)
(I’m a blackstar)
(I’m a blackstar)

In the villa of Ormen
Stands a solitary candle
At the centre of it all
Your eyes

On the day of execution
Only women kneel and smile
At the centre of it all
Your eyes
Your eyes

Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)

________________________________________________________________

This 1963 song talks about a “ring of fire…” In 2023, I observed an annular eclipse in northern Brazil, which showed a ring of fire… It is when the moon does not cover the sun completely and what we see around the moon shadow looks like a ring of fire… This is sort of a cowboy song melody…

Lyrics

Love is a burning thing
and it makes a firery ring
bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire…

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down,down,down
and the flames went higher.
And it burns,burns,burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down,down,down
and the flames went higher.
And it burns,burns,burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

The taste of love is sweet
when hearts like our´s meet
I fell for you like a child
oh, but the fire went wild..

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down,down,down
and the flames went higher.
And it burns,burns,burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire.

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down,down,down
and the flames went higher.
And it burns,burns,burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire
And it burns,burns,burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

And now, we share a picture of a wonderful annular eclipse, a ring of fire…

Eclipse (John Denver)

________________________________________________________________

This song also can also be related to an eclipse… Because it says “Sometimes I think I’ll never see the sun again”… In Ancient times, populations did not know the basic mechanism of solar eclipses as we know today… And they thought the world would end and the sun would never return again… They were agricultural societies so they depended tremendously on the sunlight to survive, so the sudden and mysterious disappearance of the sun in broad daylight looked like a great threat for them… This song also sounds like a reflection about life… For example, it mentions work, such as in “I think its kind of interesting the way things get to be/ The way that people work with their machines”…

Lyrics

The sun is slowly fadin’ in the Western sky
Sometimes it takes forever for the day to end
Sometimes it takes a lifetime
Sometimes I think I’ll never see the sun again
In the east a shaded moon is hangin’ lazily
I do believe I saw the old man smile
I do believe I did
I do believe he’s been hangin’ all the while
I think it’s kind of interesting the way things get to be
The way that people work with their machines
Serenity’s a long time comin’ to me
The fact I don’t believe I know what it means
There’s a heavy smog between me and my mountains
It’s enough to make a grown man sit and cry
It’s enough to make you wonder
It’s enough to make the world roll up and die
I think it’s kind of interesting the way things get to be
The way that people work with their machines
Serenity’s a long time comin’ to me
The fact I don’t believe I know what it means any more
When the sun is slowly fadin’ in the Western sky
Sometimes it takes forever the day to end
Sometimes it takes a lifetime
Sometimes I think I’ll never see the sun again
Sun again

Moonshadow (Cat Stevens)

________________________________________________________________

We included this Cat Stevens song of 1971… Although it does not mention the word ‘eclipses,’ but it does talk about a “moonshadow” several times, and we can relate that to when a solar eclipse happens, there is a moon shadow casted on the sun…

Lyrics

Yes, I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin’ and hoppin’ on a moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my hands
Lose my plow, lose my land
Oh, if I ever lose my hands
Oh if, I won’t have to work no more

And if I ever lose my eyes
If my colors all run dry
Yes, if I ever lose my eyes
Oh if, I won’t have to cry no more

Yes, I am bein’ followed by a moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin’ and hoppin’ on a moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my legs
I won’t moan, and I won’t beg
Oh, if I ever lose my legs
Oh if, I won’t have to walk no more

And if I ever lose my mouth
All my teeth, north and south
Yes, if I ever lose my mouth
Oh if, I won’t have to talk

Did it take long to find me?
I asked the faithful light
Oh, did it take long to find me?
And are you gonna stay the night?

I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin’ and hoppin’ on a moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow

Moonshadow, moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow

Darkness on the face of the Earth (Willie Nelson)

________________________________________________________________

This song also does not mention the word ‘eclipse’ but it says… “And there was darkness on the face of the earth”… Well, during a total solar eclipse there is darkness in the path of totality of the eclipse… It is interesting to know that the path of totality is different from the path of visibility… On the path of visibility a partial eclipse is seen… And on the path of totality, as the name suggests, a total solar eclipse is seen… The song also says…”The sun was in a million pieces scattered all around”… It could be a poetic description that the sun, when disappearing in broad daylight during a total solar eclipse, could be interpreted in Ancient Times as if it was being destroyed by a powerful heavenly monster or demon…

Lyrics

The morning that you left me was just another day
How could I see the sorrow that had found me
And then you laughed and told me that I was in your way
And I turned and ran as heaven fell around me

I stumbled through the darkness my footsteps were unsure
I lived within a world that had no sunshine
But when you left me darling my world came to an end
And there was darkness on the face of the earth

And the stars fell out of heaven and the moon could not be found
The sun was in a million pieces scattered all around
Why did you ever leave me, you knew how it would hurt
And now there’s darkness on the face of the earth

The stars fell out of heaven and the moon could not be found
The sun was in a million pieces scattered all around
Why did you ever leave me, you knew how it would hurt
And now there’s darkness on the face of the earth
And now there’s darkness on the face of the earth

The Whole of the Moon (The Waterboys)

________________________________________________________________

This song also does not mention the word ‘eclipse’ but it says… “I saw the crescent/ You saw the whole of the moon”… Well, the whole of the moon is what we see in a total solar eclipse… It is a song about hope and good things too, as in… “You climbed on the ladder/ and you know how it feels/ To get too high/ Too far too soon”… A beautiful and inspiring song…

Lyrics

I pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
You were there in the turnstiles
With the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars
cnd you know how it feels
To reach too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
I was grounded
While you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
You cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
You saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wondered I guessed and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
… but you swooned!
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
With a torch in your pocket
cnd the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder
cnd you know how it feels
To get too high
Too far too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon!
Unicorns and cannonballs
Palaces and piers
Trumpets towers and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags rags ferryboats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars
You climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like comet
Blazing your trail
Too high too far too soon
You saw the whole of the moon

You want it darker (Leonard Cohen)

________________________________________________________________

This song does not mention the word ‘eclipse’ but it says… “You want it darker/ We kill the flame”… As for the “You want it darker” we can associate it with the expectations of people and scientists who travel and go to observe a total solar eclipse… They really “want it darker”… As for the “We kill the flame”… We can associate that with the time when the moon covers the sun and we see totality… When the entire sun is covered by the moon and we can see the external halo that surrounds it… The magnificent solar corona… This song also has an association with religion and faith, as when it says… “Magnified, sanctified/ Be the holy name/ Vilified, crucified/ In the human frame”… It seems to be an allusion to Jesus Christ crucifixion…

Lyrics

If you are the dealer, I’m out of the game
If you are the healer, it means im broken and lame
If thine is the glory, then mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame

Magnified, sanctified
Be the holy name
Vilified, crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning
For the help that never came
You want it darker

Hineni, hineni
I’m ready, my Lord

There’s a lover in the story
But the story’s still the same
There’s a lullaby for suffering
And a paradox to blame
But it’s written in the scriptures
And it’s not some idol claim
You want it darker
We kill the flame

They’re lining up to prisoners
And the guards are taking aim
I struggle with some demons
They were middle class and tame
I didn’t know I had permission
To murder and to maim
You want it darker

Hineni, hineni
I’m ready, my Lord

Magnified, sanctified
Be the holy name
Vilified, crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning
For the love that never came
You want it darker
We kill the flame

If you are the dealer, let me out of the game
If you are the healer, I’m broken and lame
If thine is the glory, mine must be the shame
You want it darker

Hineni, hineni
Hineni, hineni
I’m ready, my Lord

Well, we hope this selection of songs has helped you better connect to solar eclipses… And Astronomy in general… You and your friends or family who enjoy Astronomy and eclipses can use this music selection to better enjoy the moments you will observe a partial or a total solar eclipse… Schoolteachers can use these songs in the classroom to engage students on the theme of solar eclipses…

Some of our selected songs referred to God and Jesus crucifixion… Indeed, although our website is for people of all beliefs (or even without beliefs…), we authors praise the beauty Lord gave to the universe and in particular solar eclipses… Which are really God’s spectacle and a sign of his majesty… God wants us to connect with the universe, and solar eclipses are the most magnificent astronomical phenomena we can imagine…

You are welcome to share this selection of songs with other Astronomy and eclipse lovers… Or perhaps only a single song you enjoyed the most… Have fun! 🙂 And God bless you!
